I have been involved in K-12 education for sixteen years, much of that time as a secondary teacher in rural school systems.  As  an educational consultant, I am focused on providing quality professional development for K-12 rural teaching staffs. Given that rural teacher are often isolated by grade levels and content areas, it is essential that professional development be applicable to a variety of grade levels and content areas. My workshops are designed to help bridge this gap among rural teachers, so their instructional planning and curricular implementation is aligned and effective.

Professional Development Workshops

Building Rural Curriculum
This workshop series is focused on supporting rural K-12 teachers in their development of a standards-based district curriculum. The first workshop engages teachers in conversations about their use of curriculum and views on how curriculum should function in their district. As a part of this workshop, teaching staff collaboratively develop curriculum documents. In subsequent workshops, teachers use these developed documents to specifically develop curriculum materials for their assigned content areas and grade levels.

Growing Webs
Strong student writing is an integral skill for student success in K-12 learning and beyond. This one-day workshop trains teachers on the use of a K-12 writing model that can unify students' writing development. The writing approach uses scaffolding to introduce students to writing through stages. Additionally, this workshop addresses writing constructs identified within state standards and methods of writing assessment.

Written Reading
Student literacy serves as a foundation for all grade levels and content areas. In this one-day workshop, K-12 teachers discuss how literacy functions within their classrooms. Teachers are introduced to a number of literacy strategies and collaborate on the development of a strategy collection specific to their school district.

These "I can..." documents are user-friendly statements based on the Montana Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies and Technical Subjects, Grades K-12.
